Private House Frankfurt/Main

STRUCTURAL DESIGN LP 1-8

Frankfurt/ Main, built in 2020-2022
Client: Private
Architects: Dietz Joppien Hammerschmidt Architekten

The construction project is a 3-story residential building with 2 residential units and an underground parking garage in Frankfurt/ Main.
The special feature of this project is not only to develop an optimal structural system that is serviceable, stable and economical but it should also be flexible and sustainable for future changes of use.
The building volume is partially displaced laterally between the individual floors and contains areas that cantilever out of the system. The exterior reinforced concrete walls act as wall-like beams to brace the upper floors to the underground parking garage.
Another challenge is the southwestern area, which requires a high degree of spatial flexibility. This necessitates a span of the supporting structure of approx. 7 to 8m. For this purpose, wide-span hollow core slabs were planned and implemented to reduce the dead load.
Furthermore, the option for an additional storey is to be considered. The basement was designed to be impermeable to water.

B-Part Am Gleisdreieck, Berlin

In the heart of Berlin, a lively and diverse urban quarter is emerging. Here, as many as possible aspects of an ideal life and work should be combined harmoniously and with a high level of social responsibility. Mobility, new work, art and culture, gastronomy, trade, innovation and digitization.
The B-Part project shows us opportunities of an urban development at Gleisdreieck. Based on the key question “How will we live and work tomorrow?”, Urbane Mitte Am Gleisdreieck presents the building to residents and interested parties.
This construction is a temporary multifunctional building. The wooden structure was created by Renggli International. Teuffel Engineering Consultants carried out the foundation design for this project.

Kindl Brewery – Centre for Contemporary Art

STRUCTURAL FACADE DESIGN, CONCEPT TO DETAILED DESIGN

Berlin 2016 – 2017
Architect: grisard´architektur, Zurich

The Kindl brewery in Berlin-Neukölln, which has been closed down for many years, has been re-designed and built as a centre for contemporary art. The supporting structure for the façade of the wind screen consists of rectangular multi-chamber hollow profiles. The system used here is Schüco Steel-Jansen VISS. In the area of the staircase a frameless glazing with point-fixings according to Fischer Zykon system with a general approval by the building authorities has been applied.

Bauhaus museum, Dessau

STRUCTURAL DESIGN COMPETITION

(1st prize)
Dessau 2015
Architect: Young & Ayata, New York/em>

The new Bauhaus Museum Dessau will for the first time offer the opportunity to present the outstanding collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation to the public on a permanent basis under the best possible conservative conditions. The primary structure of the individual exhibition halls is made of composite timber ribs. Each rib can be cut from a flat timber panel using modern CNC technology.

Wind Simulation

Windsimulation

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

worldwide since 2010
Client: Solar energy companies

Already during the engineer’s design phase a special CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software provides the numeric simulation of wind forces on buildings and other forms of structures. Particularly in connection with the design of free-standing photovoltaic plants wind simulations are of the highest importance. Various alternatives in the design can easily be modelled, analysed and evaluated very quickly.

Aldgate Statue

Aldgate-Statue

Architects: Normal

The Aldgate statue is the entry of the team “Normal” to a competition released for the design of a new landmark for the city of London. The intention was to create a memorable object at both day and night.

For the realisaton of the concept natural thatch was selected as the most appropriate material to express the concept. The internal core consists of a central steel pole which is anchored in concrete foundation and prefabricated steel ties which are joint in a symmetrical way to the pole in order to ensure equilibrium of the structure and give the desired appearance to the statue.

Adaptive Building Systems

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Architect: Braun Associates Architekten, Stuttgart/ Deutschland

In nature adaptive systems are very common, for example, one only has to think of the chameleon. In material sciences, too, current developments strive towards the invention of adaptive materials, so-called smart materials. They can vary their physical and chemical configurations and with regard to load bearing structures, such as high rise or bridges, they enable greater heights and spans.

With the help of a master plan the authorities attempted in 2006 to systematically categorize, label and secure the remains of the former Nazi camp in Bergen-Belsen. The aim has been to set up a “memorial of the age“ so that the visitors can decipher and discern what happened where. Continue reading
